February 26th, 2026 Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service welcomed students from The Carlow Institute of Further Training and Education undertaking the Emergency Services – Pre-Paramedic, Garda, Fire Service & Defence Forces to the Fire Services Learning & Development Centre, Hacketstown. Carlow Fire Officers provided and introductory training experience for the students and provided them with the experience in the role of a modern day firefighter.
A/CFO Ben Woodhouse:
‘I’m pleased to collaborate with a local education provider in Carlow to provide an introductory experience for students on this very relevant course into the role of a modern day firefighter. The opportunity allows them all to learn about the role from current serving firefighters and hopefully ‘ignites’ an interest in a future career within the Fire & Rescue Services.’
Muire Burke, Course Coordinator:
‘I would like to sincerely thank Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service for an extremely positive experience and the feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly encouraging. Many students highlighted how much they loved the Road Traffic Collision element, noting that it was a unique opportunity and not something they would normally get to experience. They particularly appreciated how well structured the training was, while also feeling that the fire officers were flexible and accommodating when students wanted to explore or ask about specific aspects of the work.
The approach of the fire officers was frequently mentioned — students felt comfortable asking questions and described them as easy-going, very encouraging, and supportive throughout the day. The practical, hands-on nature of the training made a strong impression and helped bring the role to life in a way that classroom learning cannot. Several students described the day as a really positive and eye-opening experience, with one commenting that although they hadn’t previously considered a career in the fire service, the training day had sparked a genuine interest. Others shared that they came into the course unsure of their future direction, but left the centre feeling inspired and more informed about potential career pathways.’
Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service are now preparing a Transition Year programme to be delivered in March 2026 to further engage with young members of the community who may be interested in a role within the Fire & Rescue Service.
