- E‑Scooter and E‑Bike Fire Safety
E‑scooters, e‑bikes and similar battery‑powered devices are becoming increasingly popular across Ireland. While they offer a convenient and environmentally friendly way to travel, they also present serious fire risks if not used or charged correctly.
These devices are powered by lithium‑ion batteries. When damaged, overcharged or used incorrectly, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode rapidly, producing intense heat and toxic smoke.
Understanding the Risk
Lithium‑ion batteries are generally safe when used properly, but fire can occur if they are:
- Overcharged
- Damaged or faulty
- Short-circuited
- Exposed to water or extreme conditions
In some cases, batteries can enter “thermal runaway”, where they ignite and burn fiercely, often beyond the control of standard firefighting equipment.
Buying Safely
To reduce risk from the outset:
- Always buy from a reputable retailer
- Check that the product carries a genuine CE mark
- Ensure packaging includes manufacturer details
- Have second‑hand devices inspected by a competent technician
Poor-quality or counterfeit products are more likely to fail and cause fire.

Charging Safety
Charging is the highest-risk activity for e‑scooters and e‑bikes.
Follow these key safety rules:
DO:
Use only the charger supplied or an approved replacement
Charge outside where possible
Charge in a location that does not block escape routes
Unplug once fully charged
Supervise charging where possible
DO NOT:
Charge overnight or unattended
Charge when you are out of the home
Charge in hallways or near exits
Charge in communal areas of apartments (these are protected escape routes)
Cover the device while charging (this traps heat)
Charging in hallways or escape routes can block evacuation in the event of a fire and is particularly dangerous.
Warning Signs of Battery Failure
Stop using your device immediately if you notice:
- Burning smell
- Hissing or popping sounds
- Smoke or gas release
- Excessive heat
- Erratic behaviour or charging issues
These may indicate a failing battery that could ignite.
Final Advice
E‑scooters and e‑bikes are safe when used properly but poor charging practices, unsafe storage, or low-quality products can lead to fast‑developing and life‑threatening fires. Battery fires can spread quickly and release highly toxic fumes, which can be deadly.
Take simple precautions can protect your home, your escape route, and your life.
